The downing of a Zeppelin may have been one of WWI's most terrifying sights. The gargantuan body ablaze, flames fed from the inside by leaking hydrogen, the slow but inevitable sinking from the sky - anyone familiar with footage of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster will understand its impact. During WWI, the German military made extensive use of Zeppelins, both as scouts and as bombers - the 'rigid airships' could easily reach Britain from mainland Europe, posing a serious threat.
